Paul Gauguin and Edvard Munch - Color, Expression and Symbolism

The revolution that turned its back to traditional painting techniques had begun with Manet and the Impressionists and then was followed through by the Post-Impressionists.

Post Impressionists rejected Impressionism’s concerns with the spontaneous and naturalistic rendering of light and color. Instead they favored an emphasis on more symbolic content, formal order and structure. Exploring new frontiers of art, artists like Paul Gauguin and Edvard Munch, who form the core of these two lectures, along with van Gogh, Cezanne, the German Expressionists and Fauvists, among others, were increasingly concerned with the expressive qualities of line, form and colour.

This series will review some of the great Post Impressionists masters whose far reaching aesthetic impact influenced groups that arose during the turn of the 20th Century like Expressionism, Cubism, Cubism, Fauvism and others.

Art documentaries by award winning producer Phil Grabsky will provide captivating in-depth looks into the iconic pieces of the artists, accompanied by insights from leading historians and art critics.

The first lecture revolves around the work of Paul Gauguin, who along with Cezanne and van Gogh, began using colour to express inner feelings and responses to the world around them. The session will briefly look at the work of Cezanne and van Gogh, and then discuss Gauguin’s early work and his later journey to the South Seas to explore his expressionist leanings, becoming the father of primitivism.
