A Short Story of Spanish Painting

Spain is a land of contrasts; a country that has experienced everything from the most severe inquisitors to the bravest revolutionaries; from the greatest conquests to the most splendid of empires. It has also witnessed the rise and demise of numerous art currents, although the decisive roles to the development of Spanish art correspond to individuals like El Greco, Velazquez, Goya and Picasso.

Based on selected artists, styles and contextualized images, this introductory overview will cover some of the major influences that surfaced to define the characteristics of the Spanish visual arts: the Altamira caves, the Moorish heritage, the Low Countries, the Italian Renaissance and so forth. The Golden Age will review EL Greco and Velazquez along with some of their contemporaries, whereas Goya will precede Picasso and the modernists.
