Singapore Modernism

The lecture will provide an understanding and overview of the work of Singapore’s pioneer generation of artists.
Beginning with the water colourist Lim Cheng Hoe who emerged from the colonial school system, the lecture will go on discussing the founding of the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) and the migrant artists who combined the aesthetics of Chinese painting with the sensibilities of the western avant gardes to create the Nanyang idiom that came to define early Singaporean art. The pivotal "Bali Trip" that helped revolutionise the artistic vision of the pioneers will also be discussed.

The artists discussed will include Lim Hak Tai, Chen Chong Swee, Liu Kang, Cheong Soo Pieng, Chen Wen Hsi, and Georgette Chen. The talk will conclude with a brief discussion of the Ten Man Art Group and touch on Singaporean modernism during the years leading up to Independence.

With the highly anticipated Opening of Singapore’s National Art Gallery which will exhibit some of Singapore’s greatest modernist  masterworks, Corcovado Arts is offering a unique opportunity to find out more about the pioneer generation of artists that laid the foundations of a Singaporean/Nanyang art tradition.
